17 appointments, over a 24 month period, were required to fully correct this Class II, division 1
malocclusion. The small size of the SPEED Brackets allowed placement on all erupted teeth at the first appointment. The
low force/deflection characteristics of the initial Supercable archwires allowed engagement of all teeth at the time of the
initial bonding. Operating in the passive zone of the brackets with 0.016 diameter wires (in 0.018 slot brackets), allowed
the crowded incisors to align without retraction forces that could tax anchorage and tip the canines/first premolars into
the extraction sites. The active nickel titanium spring clips allowed full alignment to occur with only small, round, nickel
titanium archwires and thus, physiologic forces. Space closure in the upper arch was accomplished with the Hills Dual
Geometry Wire, which maintained excellent torque control while allowing low retraction forces to retract the incisors. Full
torque expression (anterior and posterior) was established with full sized (0.017x0.022) SPEED Wire in Stainless Steel. Full
posterior torque correction provided level marginal ridges, even in the extraction sites. Full anterior torque control assured
expression of the appliance prescription, thus assuring proper interincisal angle, and full correction of the Class II molar
relationship. Anterior and cuspid guidance were established, thus optimizing occlusal function and masticatory efficiency.
Evaluation of the third molars was deferred to later, as resolution of the posterior crowding improved the likelihood of
uneventful eruption of the third molars.
